Small things make me happy

Friday, 13 April, 2012

Easter – any holiday, actually – wouldn’t be complete without a new book for Charlie. He loves looking at the fossils at my work and will talk to you for hours about sea creatures if you let him, so this book about prehistoric ocean dwellers was a fantastic find. We went to Galveston last weekend and were delighted to find that the gulf is warm enough for swimming. One of us pretends to be an octopus, another an eel, and another a coelacanth. I’ll let you guess who is who.

Our little garden is already showing promise of a plentiful year. After only a few weeks we already have a baby New Mexico Big Jim pepper! And there are flowers on some of our strawberry, tomato and squash plants too. Depending on how productive the garden is I’m thinking about making our own salsa and tomato sauce. Which will mean learning how to can – something I’ve wanted to try for years.

Stockinette. I know some people find it boring to knit but I don’t. I’m taking a break from my own designs to knit the Abbi shawl collar cardigan by Elizabeth Smith. Such a perfect layering piece.

And a new book for me too – The Quarter Acre Farm by Spring Warren. In my wildest hippie fantasies I dream about doing the same thing – getting rid of the yard and replacing it with raised beds and growing most of our food. Some day I will do this.

FoodinJars is a great resource on canning, if you haven’t already seen it. Of course, there are tons of great resources.

Good to see a post. I am still working on getting all of the garden in. Canning is easy! I highly recommend that you get a Ball Blue Book…they are only about $10. It will tell you everything you need to know to can. Happy Spring!
