A busy spring

Friday, 23 March, 2012

I’ve been seeing A LOT of this lately. My desk at work, with a wee picture of wool to keep me sane and Charlie’s school picture to make me smile. And my MP3 player. Oh man, do I rely on it. Work has been so busy lately, which means hours and hours spent staring at the computer screen, made much more bearable by knitting podcasts and my favorite music.

Sweaters are not sweaters but SWEATERS! again, and after quite a long break (for me) from knitting them they are suddenly taking up large amounts of brain space – both my own designs and patterns from others – and my Ravelry queue is growing longer by the day.

Before I allow myself to cast on someone else’s pattern I’m working on a couple designs of my own. This one, which is almost finished – just a few more rows to go! – is inspired by the colors of one of my favorite places: the beach in Galveston. I love that little Gulf town so much; my family and I have had so many great times together there. It has this wonderful run-down charm to it, mostly because it keeps getting destroyed by hurricanes.

Both designs are little vests, perfect for spring or summer, and will be available separately or as a small collection. It’s now warm enough in Houston for me to wear them, and with spring comes my irrational fantasies about starting a giant garden and growing all our food. The Scientist shares in these daydreams, and has expressed interest in digging up part of the yard and adding in another garden space. And Charlie isn’t left out either – he helped me plant all of these!

Edamame, bush beans, three varieties of tomatoes, two types of strawberries and peppers, summer squash, green onions and, in a few weeks when it’s a little warmer, watermelon. We’re already talking about what we want to plant at the end of summer – Houston’s hot temps mean there are new crops to plant in September and October when it gets a little cooler.

I love spring.

Ok. I’m jealous. It’ll be at least another month before I can plant anything!

I look forward to seeing your new designs! The sneak peek looks promising! I also planted some seeds last Monday! This morning I saw that one is growing already! The next few days will be fun 😉 Have a great weekend!
