2011 Houston Art Car Parade

Monday, 23 May, 2011

Yesterday was the Art Car parade in Houston! I’ve been hearing about how much fun this event is for months, and it didn’t disappoint.

I was amazed by the number of entries – I think there were around 250. Some cars were obviously homemade, others were done by professionals. There were crazy bicycles, boat cars, low riders with hydraulics that made them go up on three wheels, party buses, even an airplane. The street was lined as far as I could see with people, and everyone was cheering and enjoying themselves. It was great to see creativity displayed and celebrated.

I took way too many pictures to be able to share them all, but here are some of my favorites.

It’s hard to tell, but this car is covered in Peeps.

Pee-wee was on the back! The car stopped and the guy got off and did the Pee-wee dance to Tequila, which drew loud cheers.

Have you ever wished your car was a giant metal chicken? Now’s your chance! This beauty is for sale.

There were a number of small cars like this one that were driven by children.

I saw more people taking pictures of The Crapper Car than any of the others.

My favorite of the parade? There were so many good ones it’s impossible to choose! If you’d like to see more of my favorites, I’ve created an album on Flickr for the parade.

Another Texas first happened at the parade – my first fire ant bite. It stung when it happened, but today the fun has kicked in. My toe is swollen and itchy, but it hurts when I touch it. SO THAT’S FUN.

These pictures are a hoot! It makes me want to find a similar parade in my area. I hope it wasn’t a 100F while you were out there.

The Crapper Car is just like Aussie humour – we call them dunnies though!
