Knitting smarter

Monday, 16 May, 2011

My stash is full of bright colors.

A look back at some of my finished projects show that I don’t have any trouble knitting lace or following complicated patterns.

Many of the projects in my past have been knit because I think they’re cute, without much thought to whether they’ll go with anything in my closet or if I would ever really wear them. I’ve started to try to be more selective about what I knit. I have far too many finished knits sitting unloved and unworn.

I’m going to stick to the monochrome color scheme I’m naturally drawn to and focus on the classic stitch patterns ā€“ stockinette, garter, ribbing ā€“ I not only get the most wear out of out, but like knitting the best.

I’ll incorporate simple design elements like stripes, small cables, and eyelets for a special touch, and knit accessories that pop with color to compliment the clothing I already own.

These are guidelines, not rules. I have no doubt that there are bright sweaters and lace shawls somewhere in my future. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to become a better knitter. Now I want to be a smarter knitter.

I’m currently working on a similar blog post and my stash is starting to trend in a similar direction. šŸ™‚ I’m realizing there’s a disconnect between what I love to knit and what I actually wear; I’m working to fix it.

Hard to imagine you would not wear those beautiful things but yes, most of all you need to wear what you knit or what is the point. Think of all you have learned and now you have a drawer of wonderful gifts. Love you!
