Lost: Knitting Mojo

Saturday, 27 June, 2009

This week has been a pretty blah week. I’ve been plodding along on my Whisper Cardigan, and finished the upper body and the second sleeve, but I haven’t been feeling it. I want to knit this project. I know it will be much loved once it’s finished. But every time I look at it all I can think is DO. NOT. WANT.

It doesn’t help that the next part of the project is mind numbingly boring: 308 stitches, knit in 1×1 rib on size 2 needles for 3″. I started this morning but quickly put it down because I don’t want to do it.

All week I’ve been fighting the urge to cast on for something different. Another cardigan, a shawl, anything to break up the monotony. But once I’ve decided Yes! I am definetely going to cast on for X project, something else catches my eye and my attention wanders. I’ve lost my knitting mojo. If you see it would you tell it to come home soon? I really miss it.

I think we all go through this phase with certain projects at one point or another. I’ve found myself doing it even with small projects that were just not terribly stimulating.

Just gotta push through it. If you give in to the urge and cast on for something else, who knows if you’ll go back to the cardi any time soon!

You know, I sometimes find that I need to do something else entirely for a while when I’m feeling like that about a book I’m reading or a project I’m knitting. Go for a hike, or just watch a non-knitting-friendly movie (like, one in a foreign language I don’t speak). Or make a recipe I’ve never made before. Something unexpected, that will jolt me out of my rut. Then, sooner or later, I find that the dreaded project becomes fun and appealing again. Anyway, worth a shot!

I’ve sent it on its way with a vegemite sandwich and a bottle of drink….plus a map.

I haven’t knit a stitch since June 26, and it’s now July 6. Maybe our mojos ran off together!
