A Year in Sundara: Month One

Sunday, 12 April, 2009

Although I could say that my Year in Sundara began in mid-February, to make things easier I’m saying it’s running from March 1, 2009 – February 28, 2010. I’ve got one month down. A scarf, a shawl, and 3/4 of a vest complete.

My reason for starting this was because too many people, myself included, had a tendency to collect Sundara yarn. To treat it as art; to not knit with it. And with these three projects I feel like I’ve succeeded in changing my mindset. I even have several sock projects in mind and before? The idea of knitting socks out of Sundara yarn? Inconceivable.

The benefits of what I’m doing are twofold. 1, I’m allowing myself to knit exclusively with one of the most lovely yarns out there and 2, Hopefully this will get my Sundara stash under control because it was getting a little large.

But. Isn’t there always a but?

This is also really hard. Sundara is not the only dyer out there that produces yarn I love. Even though it’s only been a month, my fingers are itching to knit with something else. I would love to try MadelineTosh Worsted or Sanguine Gryphon Bugga, among others. And speaking of MadelineTosh Worsted, that’s another problem.

Sundara’s worsted is really expensive.  For $25 you get 175 yards. For MadelineTosh worsted, it’s around $18 for 225 yards. One of the sweaters I want to knit is Amelia, from the Winter 2008 Knitty. To make it out of Sundara would cost me $250. And there is no way I can justify spending that much money on one sweater.

My Year in Sundara is going to be filled with a lot of shawls, scarfs, and smaller sweaters. I won’t be able to knit several patterns I’m really excited about. I don’t like that. Knitting is about fun, and limiting what I can knit leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I’m still dedicated to doing this. And as winter turns into spring (a process that’s not finished in Idaho, snow is a possibility for another month!), and spring into summer, worsted weight sweaters will fade from my mind. And let’s concentrate on that for now.

That’s a lot of Sundara you have! Sounds like it will be an enjoyable year. And it’s too late to start a worsted weight sweater this year, right? 😉

Best of luck with your endeavor! I’ve been trying to do the same thing with my exploding STR stash. It’s kind of a strange thing to knit everything in the same yarn. In a way it get s kind of boring, but at the same time other yarns start to feel weird. Maybe that’s just me. I don’t know. All that Sundara is sure going to make some gorgeous projects though! It’s hard to go wrong with her yarn.

I really admire what you’re doing! I wish I had the will power to get my own stash under control. For me, its Blue Moon that I’m addicted to. I think I have almost every colour…..and only 2 Sundara skeins. 🙂
