Forest Life

16 Aug

Living in Idaho, there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t see the forest. I don’t live in the woods. I live in a city. But two blocks from my house the city ends and the forest begins.

I don’t do a lot of hiking. Hardly any at all. But when I do get out in the forest I love it. Especially cool, damp forests, where the sun has a hard time getting through the trees, and everything is green and covered with moss.

The colors I am drawn to, and this is evident when you look at my clothing, are dark – blacks and greys – with accessories that pop with color – cherry red shoes, a bright turquoise scarf, rainbow striped socks. My yarn stash mostly reflects this.

Mixed in are a few skeins I’m not quite sure what to do with. They’re outside my color comfort zone, but when I saw them I was so drawn to them I couldn’t not buy them. They are the colors of the forest: dark greens, browns and gold.

From top: Noro Kureyon sock in color 164, Sundara Sock in Bronzed Forest, Fleece Artist Merino Sock 2/6 in Forest, Sanguine Gryphon Eidos in Orchesis, and Fearless Fibers Superwash Sock in Marrakesh.

My favorite is the Sundara. It captures the forest, as I see it, perfectly.

I have this idea that next year I will knit to a theme for each quarter of the year. One would be projects inspired by the forest, one would be patterns based on Harry Potter, and I’m not sure what the other two would be. It won’t happen. The quickest way to get me to not do something is to tell me I have to do it, even if it’s just me telling myself. Case in point: the Ravelympics, which have been a spectacular failure. Even though I like to project I’m knitting, I DON’T WANNA. YOU CAN’T MAKE ME. That and the 500 page book I demolished in three days.
